THE TERRITORY
THE TERRITORY
Along the ridge of Monte Subasio stand some isolated peaks among which the most important are, from north to south, Mount Subasio (1290 m), Mount Civitelle (1280 m) and La Sermolla (1191 m).
Also it stands at the northwestern tip of the hill San Rufino (1110 m) and to the southeast of the relief, Our Lady of Spella (978 m); further south, separated from the valley of the Fosso Renaro, Monte Pietrolungo (914 m).
Characteristic rounded shape and the towns of Assisi and Spello which stretch along the slopes, make the Monte Subasio easily identifiable in the panorama of the Umbrian plain.
The Mount separates and connects with a natural frame, the historic towns of Assisi, Spello, Nocera Umbra and Valtopina, as a unifying element of the landscape. the top is plain and evident karst phenomena, contrasts with the steep slopes above the eastern part. the slopes of Subasio are covered by a major masting that stands out in three groups: the first one is characterized by the cultivation of which extends from Assisi to Spello on one side and on the other from Costa di Trex to Armenzano and San John; the second natural arboreal vegetation of Cerro and Roverella, Black Hornbeam, Flowering Ash, Maple and Beech and Holm; high forests of resinous plants, due reforestation, characterize the third band together to cacuminal grazing meadows.
FAUNA
The remarkable variety of natural environments does not host a poor fauna even if hunting is banned for decades in the vast state-owned area of the relief: the wolf is occasionally reported, Eagle real one has evidence of settlement until the ’60s, as well as the rock partridge. the current management of the mountain favors the new colonization of the partridge, the wild cat, the squirrel, the wood pigeon, the magpie, the jay the porcupine, the badger, the fox, the weasel, the stone marten and the wild bear.
Among birds of prey, especially on the eastern side, there are the buzzard, the goshawk, the scops owl.
